UPDATE: The latest ati driver in Gutsy AGAIN seems to break things. However, it is a lot easier now to ‘fix’ the problem. You simply need to add an Option to the device section in your xorg.conf:

Option "LVDSBiosNativeMode" "FALSE"

YAY! They finally got the open source ATI driver fixed for Gutsy so that is works on my Inspiron 5100. You can download a working version (tv6) from here.

There seems to be an issue with older ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 cards (found in laptops such as the Dell Inspiron 5100) and the newer open source ati driver and/or xorg code found in the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Beta. The problem is that xorg starts just fine, but there is nothing displayed on the attached screen (just black). In fact, it is sitting at the GDM login screen, and you can login (blindly). I found a workaround that is a pain, but none-the-less it turns your display on. Once you are logged in, and the display is working, you can suspend your machine and the display will come back just fine, but it will reset (and you will have to fix it again) if you reboot or restart xorg.
